  AWI is maximizing the return to woolgrowers by boosting the number of trained shearers and wool handlers across the nation. A continuing focus for 08-09 is the development of skilled wool handlers through the “Skilled Wool Handler Training Program.

• Wool harvesting DVD training resources

  A set of incredible resources to aid in the training of novice and skilled shearers and wool handlers has been developed by AWI for the wool industry.

• Wool harvesting training program

  Developed in conjunction with all existing trainer providers, a qualification and recognition standard has been created for wool handlers and shearers nationwide.

Overview

The mission of the AWI shearer and wool handler training program is:

1. To assist the wool harvesting industry ensure the availability of competent workers through the delivery of industry relevant training programs and credible skill assessment.
2. To attract and retain new entrants.
3. To build the capacity of existing workers.
4. To increase the profitability of woolgrowers.
5. To maximise government funding and support for shearer / wool handler training.

AWI has committed $1.4 million for the period 2007-08 to implement a national shearer and wool handler training program.
