The market was overall steady, with wool prices losing 0.1%, on average, at auction sales this week in Newcastle, Melbourne and Fremantle.

Global production of fine animal hair (excluding wool) remains reasonably stable at an estimated 29mkg clean in 2001. Only cashmere production is expected to increase slightly this year due to better yields. It is not expected that production volumes will increase significantly in the near future in part due to their difficult climatic growing environments and increasing grazing restrictions.

Data released in November by the Italian textile association indicate that the cotton, linen and finishing industry is also facing difficult times alongside wool.

Australia and the USA have agreed to negotiate a Free Trade Agreement. Duty-free access to the large US market would increase the competitiveness of wool and wool products made in Australia. This in turn should increase demand for Australian wool.
