China has decided to continue wool and wool top quota allocation on a first-come-first-served basis in 2003. This approach was negotiated by the Australian Government, at the behest of the Australian wool industry, during China's WTO accession talks and was put on trial this year.

Brazil, supported by Australia, challenged US cotton subsidies at the September meeting of the WTO Dispute Settlement Body. Brazil complained that US subsidies allow US cotton farmers to increase their global market share, despite having the highest production costs in the world.
Australian Wool Innovation Limited (AWI) participated in the 2002 International Wool and Wool Textile Conference, held in Shanghai on 10 and 11 October. The conference was attended by 160 delegates from ten key wool producing and manufacturing countries as well as representatives from the International Wool Textile Organisation. The key themes were information exchange, the current state of the industry, wool supply and the impact of WTO accession on China's wool textile industry and the textile industry globally.

Further statistical information on US domestic wool industry activity has become available, covering all stages of the pipeline through to retail stage.
US demand for imported worsted wool fabrics for suit-making, given duty-free entry from 1 January 2001, decreased in 2001 and is likely to be less again in 2002, according to a recent report by the US International Trade Commission.
