In a staggering week at auction, wool prices rose 16.9% on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week. This is the highest weekly increase recorded since records commenced in 1976.

Yarn production (all fibres) in the period Jan-Jul 2002 was higher by 1.5% at 202 m kg, whilst fabric production (all fibres) was up by 17% at 1,627 million sqm, compared to the same period 2001.

The market for luxury fibres was fairly depressed in the second quarter of 2002, but cashmere prices now show signs of improvement.

After a softer start to the week, auction prices rose by a further 1.1% on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week.
The market had its biggest weekly gain of the current season, finishing the week with auction prices up by a further 3.1% on average, at sales in Newcastle, Melbourne and Fremantle this week.
Generally, mill operations at Korean wool spinners/weavers remain firm. However, textile orders received for the Autumn/Winter season 2002/03 were below forecast levels leading to top making and worsted spinning sector activities being affected.

According to the Mexican Textile Chamber (CANAINTEX) as of the 28 August 2002 the country officially eliminated its import duty on imported raw and semi-processed wool. The decision covers greasy, scoured, carbonised wool and, most importantly for Mexican mills, wool top.
