Data for March 2003 reveals that China's imports of raw wool rose again that month, compared with year earlier results. This would have been helped by ready access to quota unlike March 2002 when quota was restricted.

The downward trend continues for Russia's textile industry as evidenced by the statistics for production of yarn and fabric during March. Yarn production (all fibres) for January-March 2003 fell by 11% whilst fabric production (all fibres) by a smaller amount, down 3%, compared with the same period 2002.

EU farm ministers have adopted a fundamental reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) that will completely change the way the EU supports its farm sector.
March data indicated a fall in German retail sales, beating even the most pessimistic forecasts. March retail sales were down 4% on the year in real terms and 3% lower than February's. March sales results were the worst since November 2002 when a similar slide was reported.
