The Australian wool market rallied this week with prices increasing 8.7% on average at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle.

An examination of preliminary data for full year 2002 reveals that global trade in wool knitwear fell, for the first time since 1996, by around 10%. Leading importers like Japan and USA (which together account for around 25% of world imports) reduced volumes (weight basis) by 11% and 10% respectively between 2001 and 2002.

According to statistics from the US Office of Textiles Agreements (OTEXA), US imports of wool apparel were up 13% in January 2003 compared with January 2002 to 9 million square metres. Very cold weather in January seems to have been a major driver for the increased imports.

Demand for home textiles in the US, UK and Australia, particularly for wool carpets, has felt the positive effects of low interest rates, rising real wages, a solid labour market and rising house prices. Affected emotionally by the conflict in Iraq, consumers are focusing on themselves and on making their homes nicer, more fulfilling places. This demand trend has been positive for broad micron wool.
