Textile industry consulting group Werner International reports that of the 52 countries it surveyed in its labour cost comparison survey, most have experienced increases of less than 10% in the hourly cost of labour in the textile industry between 2000 and 2002. In some cases, hourly labour costs have actually declined.

In Italy, apparel sales continued to be one of the poorest performing in the retail sector with only a very small increase during the six months to June 2003, compared with 2002. In June apparel sales fell for the second month running and the first half of the year reflected the slow start to January and spring season sales.

Import statistics from the US Office of Textile Agreement (OTEXA) show that imports of wool apparel by the US remained stagnant during the first seven months of 2003. However, the unit price of wool apparel imports has risen modestly.
