The latest Situation and Outlook Report for New Zealand Agriculture and Forestry released by MAF reports that wool production in New Zealand is expected to continue to decline, while exports are forecast to record modest growth during the 2003/04 season.

The Australian wool market continued it's decline this week as prices decreased by 2.6% on average at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle.

The was a positive trend in the Australian wool market when sales resumed this week after the Christmas/New Year break. Prices increased by 1.9% on average at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle.

Our last report on the retail picture in Japan saw the extremely sluggish sales of September 2003 start to pick up in October. Even so, it is anticipated that apparel retail sales in 2003 will decline for the 13th straight year.

The picture in the German retail and fashion sectors at the end of 2003 could not be called rosy, however consumer sentiment was slightly better in November and further improvements were expected for December. Stubbornly high levels of unemployment and uncertainties about political and taxation reforms in 2004 continue to hold back consumer spending. December retail figures were 3-4% down on the previous year.
