Buoyant sales of wool apparel including knitwear in the last quarter helped lift China's volume demand at retail in 2005. This was the second consecutive annual lift in volume terms since the 2003 slump.

Australian Bureau of Statistics data reveal exports of greasy, scoured and carbonised wool, tops and noils were solidly above the year earlier level in the first month of this year - the first gain since May 2005. For the season to January however, exports remained lower year-on-year.

Official Italian apparel sales data has shown clothing purchases ended 2005 better than expected. However, the rate of increase remains very modest with the retail environment driven by expenditure on discount products and food and drink.
