Demand estimates for January-September 2006 indicate that Canada's wool's usage in manufacturing was up solidly compared with the same period in 2005, mainly as the result of increased usage by those mills involved in interior products rather than apparel.

US imports of wool rich, chiefly wool and wool poor hand-knitting yarn grew exponentially between 2001 and 2004, peaking in 2005. However, analysis of more recent import data suggests the boom is petering out for man-made fibres and wool blends, but wool rich and fine animal hair hand-knitting yarn product continues to do well.

Quarterly surveys conducted by SMI-ATI show a strengthening recovery in Italy's textile and apparel industry in 2006. Though industry sales turnover was only marginally higher in Q1 2006 compared to Q1 2005 this has since grown in Q2 year-on-year and expanded again in Q3 year-on-year.

China Customs Bureau figures show imports of raw and semi-processed wool during September dropped, compared to the same period the previous year. Of the key wool products imported (greasy, scoured, top and carbonised wool) carbonised wool recorded the largest percentage decline during the month, although it was from a low base. Scoured wool was the only segment to report a year-on-year increase, while imports of greasy wool and wool top also dropped.

According to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), retail sales volume (all items) fell between August and September - the first monthly fall since January 2006, reflecting decreases for non-food stores overall and the non-store retailing sector.
