UK supermarkets have nearly doubled sales of non-food items in the last five years, a new study from retail research specialist TNS showed. It also said supermarkets sold 19% of all apparel and footwear in 2005, compared to 11% in 2001, and 27% of the CDs and DVDs purchased in Britain.

China's 2005 textile exports grew 20% to $116bn, the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Textiles said, with exports to the US and EU rocketing by 62.7% in the first 10 months.
US retail sales are projected to increase a modest 4.7% this year, down on the 6.1% gain in 2005, as higher energy prices and a slowdown in the housing market dampen spending, the National Retail Federation said Monday (January 16).
The Australian Wool Market again finished the week on a positive note with prices 2.7% higher, on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle, making a total upward movement of 11.7% since the resumption of sales in January.

2005 may have heralded a new era of quota-free trading for all textiles and clothing with the elimination of long standing quotas but, after a surge in exports from China, a new range of protectionist measures introduced during 2005 seek to once again restrict trade from China.

The Australian wool market continued its strong upward movement, with prices finishing 3.5% higher, on average, at sales in Sydney, Launceston and Fremantle, making a total upward movement of 15.6% since the resumption of sales in January.

A strong rise in clothing sales in Tokyo department stores during December was supported by demand for heavy-weight winter clothing, such as coats, jackets, and knitwear.
According to the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS), December retail sales volume showed a continuation in general sales growth seen since the summer.

According to US Office of Textiles and Apparel (OTEXA) data, US wool apparel imports fell by around a quarter in November year-on-year and when compared with the month of October the fall was even more dramatic - more than half.

Japan's domestic department store sales of men's clothing rose in Q4 2005, the third consecutive year-on-year increase since the June quarter. While annual sales growth rate for 2005 may be marginal, it represents the first increase since 1996.
