AWTA test volumes were lower for the month of January 2006 compared with January 2005, however an anticipated pick-up in fleece weights in New South Wales and Western Australia may see a turnaround in test data for February 2006.

Cotton prices saw a modest upturn during the month of January, largely due to an expected firming of demand from China, and aided by higher prices in India and an influx of buying interest on the New York Futures market. Prices peaked during the first week of February before drifting marginally downwards before some rally towards the end of the month.

In February, wool prices in Australia commenced a cyclical demand-driven upturn from the low point reached in late December 2005. The lift in fine and broad wool prices started from normal levels for this stage of the price cycle; but for medium merino wool, prices are starting from a relatively higher base.

Imports in December recorded the third consecutive month-on-month rise, and reached the highest monthly total since December 2002.
