The beginning of 2007 saw acrylic and polyester staple prices moderately softer. These softer synthetic fibre prices in January are believed to have been as much the result of market forces as any decrease in raw material costs, especially where acrylics are concerned; as MEG prices softened moderately during the month, while acrylonitrile prices were relatively steady.

A review of consolidated data shows that compared with the months of September and October in 2006, when China's raw wool and top imports declined, total wool imports in November reached the second highest level seen in the first eleven months of 2006.

According to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics in January this year the A$ value of Australian exports in the first five months of the 2006/07 season of greasy, scoured, carbonised wool and wool tops saw a strong increase compared with the same period in the 2005/06 season.

While raw resource materials, such as metals, oil and gold, as well as semi-processed products such as steel saw prices pull back moderately towards the end of 2006, they remained well above levels recorded in the previous year.
In Korea, consumer sentiment remained below the benchmark at the end of 2000 and has not deteriorated further. Sentiment, although marginally improved compared to the third quarter, is expected to remain at the current level during the first half of 2007, affected by a downturn in income even though unemployment is at 3 year lows.
