The Australian wool market finished 1.3% lower, on average, at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week against a further 2.2% appreciation of the US exchange rate.

In the January to June period, raw wool, wool top and yarn imports (in volume terms) to Japan were all unchanged from the same period last year, while wool apparel imports increased moderately, in both volume and value terms, making up for a drop in wool fabric imports.

Supported by the strong optimism of Chinese consumers, China's June retail sales (all items, nominal value terms) increased very strongly year-on-year, the fourth consecutive month of growth. A similar growth pattern has been observed for China's retail sales in the first half of 2007.

Consolidated apparel sales data from Italy for May revealed a marginal increase in nominal value, compared to the same month of 2006. Cumulative apparel sales were also higher for January-May 2007. While not cause for excitement, this is reasonably positive news for apparel sales since they are above the average for most items. Overall, a rebound was seen in food sales and a drop in non-food sales.

June retail sales in non-specialist UK stores were particularly strong, boosted by the results from department stores which traditionally fare better in poor weather. Although the high street suffered from the poor weather, online retail sales soared.

US Bureau of Economic Analysis data reveals month-on-month, personal consumption on clothing in June made a very modest gain. Retail sales at clothing and accessories stores were down moderately month-on-month, with declines also in January and April. Personal consumption on women's clothing made a recovery in June while personal consumption on men's clothing slowed in June.
