Amidst mid-year thoughts that there would be constraints on China's imports of raw wool due to high utilisation of import quota and environmental problems, China's imports of raw wool and top lifted in 2007. Imports rose in 2007 to the highest level of imports by China on record, exceeding the most recent high of 2001.

Since a low point in October, the prices for lamb and mutton have lifted as supplies of lambs and sheep fell and strong demand continued. Prices dropped in October as sheep producers turned off increased numbers of sheep and lambs in response to continued drought conditions.

With China's continuing positive economic conditions and GDP growth in 2007 higher than forecasters expected, China's consumers also lifted their spending. In textiles, the volume of apparel retail sales rose very strongly in the 11 months to November 2007 while interior textiles retail sales were similarly buoyant over the same period.
